Trophy Fishing Species

REAL TROPHY FISHING

Fishing at Club Chambeaux allows anglers, experts, amateurs or Fly fishing fans to test themselves against the Caniapiscau River, where catching real trophies is an everyday occurence, not for only one, but four (4) of the most sought after fresh water species in North America.

BROOK TROUT (SPECKLED TROUT or SQUARE TAIL)

This species which is also called red trout in Quebec has a world wide reputation as a fierce and tenacious fighter even when its weight is less than two pound (1 kg).

Try to imagine a bite between 3 and 10 lbs caught in the cold and tumultuous waters of fast flowing rapids. We recommend that inexperienced anglers use 7 lb (or more) monofilament since catches exceeding this weight are frequently recorded at Club Chambeaux. However average catches vary between 3 and 5 lbs.

OUANANICHE (LAND LOCK SALMON)

This member of the Atlantic Salmon family with orange flesh, also called Land Locked Salmon cohabits with speckled trout. For unknown reasons, perhaps the construction of many dams to create a large reservoir on one part of the Caniapiscau, we have noticed since 1984, a large increase in the wight and in the number catch throughout the season from the mid-July until the beginning of September.

Please note that the weights of the catches vary between 4 and 19 lbs and frequently exceed 10 Ibs; therefore, be equipped accordingly. Regardless of the date of your visit as soon as a fish is hooked it wiIl Ieap acrobatically out of the water and fight until exhausted unless, of course, it escapes.

LAKE TROUT (TOULADI)

Grey trout also call lake trout (Touladi). These monsters often exceed 30 lbs (15 kg) and catches over 15 lbs are normal.

They are present ail along the Caniapiscau and attack practically any lure. Those which are caught in rapids may have surprises in store for you.The cold water and their habit of swimming in strong currents give them exceptional strength and resistance.

Moreover this is why we say "BRAVO" to anglers who take specimens exceeding 20 lbs, in the boat, since most of the time they empty the reel and wave goodbye. GOOD LUCK !

GREAT NORTHERN PIKE

The pike's aggressiveness is in fact, an ever present menace for ail other species present in these waters. The pike is offen badly thought of, because of its unpleasant appearance and lack of fighting spirit.

The look of the Caniapiscau's pike differs little from those caught in lakes, but this habitat of cold running water gives it vigour and resistance which neyer fails to surprise an adversary who is not expecting to see a pike on the end of the line.

The weight of this species may be over 20 lbs and catches greater than 10 lbs are quite usual. If you enjoy savoury fish you wiIl appreciate sampling the filets, for noon shore kunch, which your guide wilI prepare in expert fashion.

CORREGONE (White Fish)

Also found in the Caniapiscau, the corregone is a white fish whose weight may exceed 5 Ibs. It is a fierce adversary, particularly attacking fly lures, and when hooked wiII give the maximum fight and wiII even Ieap out of the water in an attempt to free itself. Unfortunateley the taking of this fish is prohibited and the catch must be returned to the water immediately. The exceptional abundance of this species is one of the explanation of the quick growing of the others species present in the Caniapiscau.

RETURN TO THE WATER I RELEASING CATCHES

The first four species mentioned may be caught at wilI on condition that any catch excessing the permitted possession's limit be released immediately, taking the necessary precautions to safeguard the existence of the species.
