Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT ELSE COULD WE SAY

You still have questions?

1-What is the opening and closing date of the fall caribou hunt?

The season opens officially for fall hunts the 1st of August and terminates on October 9th.

However we start our season on the 21th of August and close the first week of October.

To insure the safety of the flights of our floatplanes, due to the Nordic temperature which causes sleet, ice and snow and the early arrival of winter in our area, we must terminate earlier than the 15th of October for the safety of our clients and pilots.

2- What is the length of your caribou hunts?

The total length of our hunting packages is 8 days, including 2 days to travel.

The cost of our package includes 6 nights at the hunting camp, 1 night in Schefferville if necessary.

3- What are the dates reserved for bow hunting, can a hunter bring a rifle and a bow?

The bow hunter is permitted to hunt the same dates as the regular hunting season. Some of our camps are more favorable for archery hunters. There is no problem to bring a rifle and bow as long as you respect the minimum weight allowance of your baggage.

4- Within the hunting season, what dates have the highest success rates?

When it comes to the autumn caribou hunting season there is no real difference what date the hunter chose, this is because Quebec is home to the largest migrating herd of caribou in the world.

It is presently estimated at one million (1,000,000) heads since 2002.

The largest migration starts after the calving in the middle of July and continues until the rutting at the end of October.

5- Whatever date you choose to hunt with Club Chambeaux doesn't affect your success because of our move policy to a more productive area.

Here are some things that you should take into consideration before choosing your hunting date.

  • If you want to fish while hunting, the regular fishing season terminates the 6th of September for all species. But, from Sept 6th to Sept 30th, fishing is permit using catch & release only.

  • If you don't like a mixture of rain, snow and windy conditions, the month of August is more favorable weather wise.

  • If you want to hunt black bear, small game (ptarmigan) please take note that the season opens the 25th of August.

  • There is no additional cost to hunt these species except that you must purchase the different hunting licenses which are available at our office in Schefferville.

  • If you prefer to take a caribou after the velvet has fallen, you should choose a date after the 10th of September. It is always possible to easely peel off the velvet once the animal has been taken.

6- Do you move a hunter to a more productive area if there is no caribou on the site that you have reserved?

As we have mentioned in answer to question # 4, this service is included in all our packages European or American Plan.

The migration of the caribou is very radical and it is impossible to predict from one year to the other.

This is why Club Chambeaux and its affiliates have built over 40 different hunting sites that were distributed strategically on the migration route of the caribou herd.

The hunting territory has a surface of 50,000 square miles.

Having a large float of hydroplanes available gives us the mobility that is necessary to move you when it is needed to assure you success in your hunt.

7- What is the minimum age to hunt?

The minimum age is 12 years old.

All hunters 12 years of age and onward must be accompanied by an adult (18 years of age and older) this gives a father and son (17 years of age and younger) the opportunity to have a hunt that they will recall for the rest of their life.

8- Is hunting on Sunday permitted?

Yes. The Quebec hunting law allowed hunting seven days a week including Sunday.

9- What is the average temperature during the hunting season?

At this latitude, the temperature can be extremely variable from one day to the other. Some days, you may live all four seasons, the morning can seem like spring, the afternoon like summer, the evening like autumn and the night like winter.

It is normal at the 55th parallel that the month of August temperature can be between 50°F and 65°F while sometimes it may go as high as 75°F. It can also go down to freezing point overnight.

The month of September is less predictable weather. It is not unusual to see the four seasons weather at the same day!

During this month, the hunter will need warm clothing, the temperature varies 32 to 50 degrees during the day with a wind chill factor that can make it feel several degrees colder.

In the month of September, you can expect rain accompanied with snow and wind.

Dress warmly and don't forget your gloves and waterproof boots.

10- What type of weapon do you recommend?

RIFLE : When hunting caribou or bear, we use the same caliber as Deer, Moose or Elk. Big caliber magnum types are not necessary.

Plan to shoot at a distance of 200 yards or less. The recommended calibers are 30.06, 270, 308 or 303.

Most of the time, caribou are shot at 200 yards or less, but at times a longer shot may be necessary, this is why we suggest that you use a rifle equipped with a scope.

Bullets of 130 to 180 grains, according to your rifle or shooting habit. Before you leave, you should shoot a couple of rounds to make sure your rifle is sighted properly and your scope well adjusted, it is too late once at the camp.

Your weapon has to be transported in a hard carrying case. Automatic weapons and hand guns are illegal in Canada.

Caliber winchester 30-30 is not recommended

BLACK POWDER GUN : The authorized caliber for this weapon is a minimum of 12.7mm (.50)

BOW must have a minimum tension of 40 lbs. (18 kg) or greater to be authorized, and this within an extension of 28" (71 cm).

Arrows have to have iron or aluminum heads, allowing a diameter penetration of 22 mm or 7/8 of an inch or more.

We recommend a head with multiple blades.

The replaceable blades will save you sharpening time and will give you more time to hunt. We recommend bow hunters also bring along a rifle.

SMALL GAME : We recommend that you use a small caliber rifle like a .22 which is adequate for the Ptarmigan in this area.

11- What type of bow is recommended?

Bow must have a minimum tension of 40 lbs. (18 kg) or greater to be authorized, and this within an extension of 28" (71 cm).

Arrows have to have iron or aluminum heads, allowing a diameter penetration of 22 mm or 7/8 of an inch or more.

We recommend a head with multiple blades. The replaceable blades will save you sharpening time and will give you more time to hunt.

We recommend bow hunters also bring along a rifle.

12- Is it recommended to hunt with a guide?

This lies entirely on your experience and preferences. Club Chambeaux offers two types of hunt, American plan hunting, guided two on one (2 x 1) or four on one (3 x 1).

We also offer a plan with no guide and no food called a European plan.

Our American plan camps have a dining room with meals prepared by a cook. There is also a shower facility with hot running water, generated electricity.

The American plan also provides professional guides who help with all aspects of your hunt including adequate preparation of your animal for the transportation of the game and that your hides and racks are taxidermist ready.

One guide for two hunters package is the format that is less demanding physically for the hunter. If you feel your health limits your activities, we recommend a 1 X 2 guided hunt so you will enjoy your adventure.

One guide for 3 hunters package. We name this package semi guided, because you have to help your guide after the animal is down, and portage to the camp.

Our European plan package camps. To assist you at each non-guided camp is a very special person we call the camp leader. We recommend that a hunter get some extra exercise a couple of weeks before his hunt so that he is in reasonable shape.

Each camp leader has many years of experience with caribou hunting and has an intimate knowledge of the territory to which he has been assigned. He can show you how to do everything you'll need to know.

In addition to being your advisor, he will make sure all equipment is kept in good operating condition and working the way it should. He'll also keep your camp supplied with firewood.

Your camp leader will make your stay pleasant and trouble-free.

With the European plan package, you have to bring your food and cook yourself. Everything is provided to prepare your meals: Cooking stove, pots, pans, dishes, cutlery, etc.

With our European Plan, non-guided hunt, one boat is provided for each 3 hunters, Life jackets and plenty of gasoline for the outboard motor are included at no additional charge. This provides more mobility and greater safety for hunters at Club Chambeaux camps. It's also a great asset for those who want to combine some great fishing with their hunting adventure.

13- Should I be in perfect physical health for this type of hunt?

All our hunting sites are located on the shore of a lake or river and are equipe with motorboats to cut down the amount of walking especially when the migration is going through your campsite. Some camp have ATV available.

With the unguided package, It is obvious that you should be in good shape to enjoy your trip to its maximum.

We recommend at least working out for a few weeks before your hunt.

If you feel that your health might not allow you to enjoy your hunt, we recommend a guided package and his experience will lighten the physical load and increase the enjoyment of your hunt. It will also increase your chance of success to its maximum.

The fishing season closes September 6th for all species. After from Sept 7th, catch and release only is permited.

Black bear: $125.00 Cad.,

The success rate is 15% to 20% for bear calculated on the number of licenses sold and 10% to 12% on the ptarmigan.

19- What time of the year do the caribou shed their velvet?

Normally the caribou will begin to shed their velvet the first week of September and are usually completely out of it the 15th of September.

It is very easy to peel off the velvet. It is almost like peeling a banana as long as you do it within hours of taking your caribou. Then, all you or your guide, have to do rinse the rack in water and the blood will wash off. With time it will slowly get its natural copper tone patina.

If you let the blood between the velvet and the rack dry, it will become very difficult to peel off.

If you are an American citizen, you must have the following documents: your caribou hunting license and the game registration paper wich we will provide you with, after your hunt in Schefferville.

If you take a black bear, we will supply you with the C.I.T.E.S. form to present at the border.

For non-resident who want to hunt in Canada, there will be a form, provided by Club Chambeaux to fill out : Type of weapon, serial number, and how you intend to use this firearm in Canada. Club chambeaux provide this form to his hunters.
